A step-up transformer is a type of transformer that has a secondary voltage output higher than its primary voltage input. It is utilised to increase voltage levels, allowing it to supply power to equipment or devices that require a higher voltage than what is initially available.
Transformers function based on the principle of mutual induction between two coils: the primary coil and the secondary coil. When an alternating current (AC) flows through the primary coil, it generates a magnetic field around it. This magnetic field, in turn, induces an alternating voltage in the secondary coil. The relationship between the number of loops or turns in the primary and secondary coils determines whether the transformer steps up or steps down the voltage.
- If the secondary coil has fewer loops than the primary coil, it results in a "step-down" transformer, reducing the voltage from the primary coil to the secondary coil.
- Conversely, if the secondary coil has more loops than the primary coil, it creates a "step-up" transformer, increasing the voltage from the primary coil to the secondary coil.
Transformers play a crucial role in adjusting voltage levels safely and efficiently, making it possible to match the electrical supply to the specific needs of various devices and systems.
